Explainer: What do we know about Israeli hostages in Gaza?
  + stars: | 2023-11-22 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
According to Israeli media and the Israeli government, up to 40 hostages being held are children, including a 10-month-old baby and preschoolers. The Israeli military said earlier this month that it recovered the bodies of two hostages in Gaza City, including 19-year-old soldier Noa Marciano. The Israeli military has said it found evidence that some hostages were held at or under hospitals. The military released video that it said also showed militants forcing two hostages into Shifa hospital on Oct. 7. Hamas released another video in October that showed three women hostages denouncing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Pictures of hostages held in Gaza, who were seized from southern Israel on October 7 by Hamas gunmen during a deadly attack, are displayed in Tel Aviv, Israel, November 15, 2023. Demands were made that Hamas produce the lists of hostages it was holding, their identifying information, and guarantees of release. Biden held a previously undisclosed phone call with the Qatari prime minister when the phasing of releases began to take shape, the official said. Shortly after Biden's call, Hamas produced details for the 50 hostages it said would be released in the first phase of any deal. Biden in a Nov. 14 call urged Netanyahu to take the deal - Netanyahu agreed.

Biden vowed that he would not relent until all American hostages in Gaza were released. Biden had his own demand throughout the talks: Humanitarian assistance had to reach Gaza, regardless of a deal. Israel’s ground invasion plans were revised so fighting could be paused if a hostage deal came together. Talks resumed last Friday, and in another conversation with the Qatari emir, Biden told him it was the last shot at a hostage deal and he had to close it now. Officials also crafted a way to try to entice Hamas to release more hostages than the 50 already agreed to.

Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said the proposal on a hostage release deal was delivered to Israel in the early hours of Tuesday. Before gathering with his full government, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on Tuesday with his war cabinet and wider national security cabinet over the deal. Israeli media including Channel 12 news said that if the deal was approved, the first release of hostages was expected on Thursday. Implementing the deal must wait for 24 hours to give Israeli citizens the chance to ask the Supreme Court to block the release of Palestinian prisoners, reports said. A U.S. official had said the deal will include a four- or five-day ceasefire, the first pause in six weeks of an Israeli bombardment of Gaza. Hamas took about 240 hostages, including children and elderly people, during its rampage into Israel that killed 1,200 people, according to Israel's tally. Relatives of the Israeli hostages and supporters had marched by the thousands along the highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem to pressure the government to secure the captives' release. An Israel Prison Service spokesperson said they were not aware of a deal to release Palestinian prisoners. Hamas has to date released only four captives: U.S. citizens Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter, Natalie Raanan, 17, on Oct. 20, citing "humanitarian reasons," and Israeli women Nurit Cooper, 79, and Yocheved Lifshitz, 85, on Oct. 23.

Washington CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu grabbed Brett McGurk’s arm as he walked out of a tense meeting of the Israeli Cabinet over securing the release of hostages Hamas was holding in Gaza. Hamas – after refusing for days – had relented in offering identifying information about several dozen hostages, such as their age, gender and nationalities. It laid out how women and children would leave in the first phase, as well as incentives for Hamas to release more hostages beyond that. On October 24, Hamas appeared to agree to the parameters of a deal to release women and children hostages. Hamas would only guarantee 50 and refused to produce identifying information about the hostages.

The U.S. Will Press Israel for Pauses in the War
  + stars: | 2023-11-02 | by ( Matthew Cullen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrives in Israel tomorrow, he plans to urge Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a series of brief cessations of military operations in Gaza, White House officials said today. U.S. officials said the “humanitarian pauses” would be designed to allow for hostages to be released safely and for aid to be distributed. However they would not, U.S. officials emphasized, resemble a broader cease-fire, which the Biden administration believes would benefit Hamas. A similar pause has been agreed to at least once before. The push comes as Biden is under increasing pressure to respond to what humanitarian groups have called an urgent crisis for civilians inside Gaza, where food, water, medicine and fuel are in short supply.

The push for what American officials call “humanitarian pauses” is one of several subjects Mr. Blinken will raise with Mr. Netanyahu and other officials when he arrives in Israel on Friday for another round of diplomacy amid fierce fighting between Israeli forces and Hamas, the group that controls Gaza. White House officials said the request for pauses was far different from an overall cease-fire, which the Biden administration believes would benefit Hamas by allowing it to recover from Israel’s intense bombardment. A strike on a refugee camp in Gaza this week killed scores of civilians even as Israeli officials said they killed a top Hamas leader. At a fund-raiser in Minneapolis on Wednesday evening, a protester confronted Mr. Biden and demanded that he call for a cease-fire. Mr. Biden responded: “I think we need a pause.

Despite a weekslong bombing effort by the Israeli military, which has left thousands dead, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, Ms. Lifshitz described a seemingly well-organized operation, with operatives given special responsibilities, including doctors, guards and medics. At a certain point a doctor also arrived and made sure that we received our pills and medication,” she said. Ms. Lifshitz said her captors paid special attention to health of the hostages, providing medication, shampoo and feminine hygiene products. The hostages were fed the same meager provisions their guards ate: a single daily meal of pita bread, two kinds of cheese and cucumber. In 2011, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners — including Hamas’s current leader in Gaza, Yahya Sinwar — in exchange for a single Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit.

Rabbi Dov Hillel Klein of the Chabad of Evanston, near Chicago, where Judith Raanan is a community member, said he gave thanks during service Saturday that she and her daughter Natalie were safe after Hamas freed the two hostages from captivity in Gaza. The past two weeks have been “beyond horrific,” he said. The community’s joy over the Raanans’ release has been tempered by the knowledge that others are still being held captive. “A full celebration can’t come until all the hostages are free,” he said.

Family members of two U.S. citizens released after being held hostage by Hamas said they experienced "extraordinary relief," but they said eight other relatives remain in Gaza. "Unfortunately, we do not have the privilege of celebrating their return, or of mourning our lost loved ones," the three relatives, Ayelet, Or and Limor Sella, said in a statement. They said they were cousins of Judith Raanan and her daughter Natalie, who were released Friday. "We will work around the clock with the other families of those held hostage until each and every one of them is back home," the statement said.

Hamas released two U.S. citizens from Gaza, the first hostages freed since militants kidnapped more than 200 people during the Oct. 7 attack. Aid trucks were still waiting to enter the Gaza Strip as Israel continued airstrikes. Two Americans released: Judith Raanan and her daughter Natalie were released by Hamas and are on their way to an Israeli military base, the Israeli prime minister’s office said. Ground invasion: U.S. and European governments are pressing Israel to hold off on its ground invasion of Gaza to allow time for more hostage releases. Hamas officials said the Palestinian death toll was more than 4,100, though U.S. officials and experts have disputed that number.

PinnedTrucks appeared to be moving through the Rafah border crossing into Gaza from Egypt, according to images shown on Egyptian state television. It was not immediately clear what the trucks were carrying, and there was no immediate comment from the United Nations, which has been pushing for movement. President Biden said on Wednesday that Israel had agreed to allow food, water and medicine into the blockaded Gaza Strip. Aid trucks have been stuck waiting at the crossing for days as the powers involved haggled over the details of getting the desperately needed supplies through. As the situation in Gaza worsens, Israel is readying a ground offensive in the territory.

RAFAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The border crossing between Egypt and Gaza opened on Saturday to let desperately needed aid flow to Palestinians running short of food, medicine and water in the territory that is under an Israeli siege. More than 200 trucks carrying roughly 3,000 tons of aid, which had been positioned near the crossing for days, began heading into Gaza. Many in Gaza, reduced to eating one meal a day and without enough water to drink, are waiting desperately for the aid. Hundreds of foreign passport holders also waited to cross from Gaza to Egypt to escape the conflict. Israel said Friday it does not plan to take long-term control over the tiny territory, home to some 2.3 million Palestinians.

Hamas Released Two American Hostages

Hamas released an American mother and daughter who were kidnapped by the Palestinian group during its deadly Oct. 7 attack and held hostage for almost two weeks in Gaza. The Israeli military received them at the border and took them to an army base in central Israel to be reunited with family members. The Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., identified the released hostages as Judith Raanan, 59, and her daughter Natalie Raanan, 17. Hamas said that it released the women for “humanitarian reasons.” The group is believed to have taken more than 200 more hostages. He asked the public to respect their privacy “as they recover and heal.”U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said there were still 10 American hostages being held in Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the mother and daughter were abducted by Hamas while they were staying at Kibbutz Nahal Oz. Israelis are still reeling from the Hamas assault and from images of fellow citizens being bundled off to Gaza, which is ruled by Hamas. An attempt to rescue all those Hamas said were now held in different locations could jeopardise their lives. American and British officials said they have been working with Qatar to secure the release of hostages, including their citizens, held in Gaza. Israel has also said that there will be no end to its full blockade of the enclave unless Israeli hostages are freed.

EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Judith Raanan and her teenage daughter, Natalie Raanan, were excited to travel to Israel to celebrate a relative's 85th birthday and the Jewish holiday season, according to their rabbi. The pair had been sending updates as the trip progressed and were enjoying “this really special mom and daughter time together," Meir Hecht said. The family hasn't heard from either mother or daughter since a week ago, after Hamas launched an unprecedented surprise attack. “We received this terrible news that Judith and her daughter Natalie are missing and apparently were most likely taken as hostages to Gaza,” Hecht said. Of your resilience, your hope, your love, your generosity, your faith and strength," Yehudis Hecht said.

Family members of Judith Raanan and her teenage daughter Natalie believe the two were taken hostage when Hamas militants attacked Nahal Oz, a kibbutz close to Gaza where they were visiting friends and family, said Meir Hecht, a rabbi at Chabad of Evanston, where Judith is a congregant. “The family though is quite frustrated by the fact that they don’t even have any confirmation of the whereabouts of Judith and Natalie, and the information coming out is just so slow,” Hecht said. Both are dual-citizens of the U.S. and Israel, he said.
